Guqin Knowledge

Discover the history, philosophy, structure and playing traditions of one of China's oldest musical instruments.

What is the Guqin?

The guqin is a traditional Chinese seven-string zither with a history extending across many centuries. It has long been associated with scholars, poetry, philosophy, self-cultivation and the appreciation of nature.

The Instrument

Seven Strings

The modern guqin normally uses seven strings. Different techniques produce open tones, stopped tones and harmonics.

Hui Markers

Thirteen markers along the surface help the player locate important harmonic positions and guide left-hand techniques.

Right Hand

The right hand plucks the strings using a vocabulary of traditional finger techniques.

Left Hand

The left hand presses, slides and ornaments notes, creating the expressive character associated with guqin performance.

More Than an Instrument

Guqin study traditionally involves more than simply learning melodies. Posture, touch, listening, interpretation and an understanding of the cultural background all form part of the learning process.
